Carrier Authority FAQ

What is an MC number?

An MC (Motor Carrier) number is a FMCSA-issued authority number required for interstate for-hire freight carriers. Brokers must verify a carrier's MC number before booking any load.

What is a DOT number?

A USDOT number is assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to track safety information, compliance reviews, and crash investigations for commercial vehicles operating in interstate commerce.

What does "insurance on file" mean?

Insurance on file means the carrier has filed proof of required liability coverage with FMCSA. Brokers should always verify this is current and meets cargo value requirements before tendering a load.

What is a safety rating and why does it matter?

FMCSA assigns safety ratings of Satisfactory, Conditional, or Unsatisfactory based on compliance reviews. Most brokers' carrier agreements prohibit booking Conditional or Unsatisfactory carriers. Many carriers have no formal rating — this is normal.

How often is this data updated?

FMCSA updates carrier data continuously. This tool caches results for 24 hours. For real-time verification on high-value loads, cross-check directly on SAFER.fmcsa.dot.gov.

Can I use this to check a broker's authority?

Yes. Brokers operating under a freight brokerage license also appear in FMCSA records. Enter their MC# to verify their broker authority status and bonding requirements.
